The decision that costs you money
Search “Milford Sound cruise” and you are shown a Queenstown coach day trip at $172. Twelve hours, door to door. About 105 minutes of that is on the water and eight-plus hours are in a bus seat. The same class of cruise is $98 if you turn up at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal under your own steam, and $162 from Te Anau with half the driving. Nobody points this out at the point of sale, because the coach seat is the thing being sold.
I am not against the coach. If you have no car, or the road is icy, or you have exactly one free day in Queenstown, the coach is the right answer and the driving commentary is genuinely half of what you came for. But it should be a decision, not a default. Below are all eight cruises I would put someone on, sorted by where the day starts.
Leaving from the Milford Sound terminal
You drive, or you are already staying at Milford, or you have come off the Milford Track. These are cruise-only tickets: $98 and $100 for two hours on the fiord, plus an overnight boat if you want the fiord after the day fleet has gone home. Leaving from Te Anau
Te Anau is 120 km from the terminal against Queenstown’s 291 km, and that difference is the whole argument. DOC suggests allowing eight hours from Te Anau for the drive, the short walks and a cruise. Four ways to do it, and they are not interchangeable. The standard coach day trip and the premium coach both give you around twelve hours and a two-hour cruise; the small-group tour puts you in a smaller vehicle on a boutique boat with lunch; the fly-back option cuts the day to nine hours by replacing the return drive with a 40-minute flight. The car park and terminal are busiest between about 11am and 1pm, when the Queenstown coaches land together. The first boat of the morning and anything from about 2pm onwards are the quiet ones. Weekdays beat weekends.
Rain is the reason to go, not the reason to cancel
Milford Sound gets 6,412 mm of rain a year across roughly 182 rain days. There are only two permanent waterfalls, Lady Bowen at 162 m and Stirling at 151 m. Every other waterfall in the photographs people bring home exists only while it is raining or shortly after. Rescheduling around a wet forecast is optimising for the wrong thing. Sleeping on the fiord

How long is the cruise itself?
105 minutes on the catamaran, two hours on most of the rest. The overnight boat is the outlier at 17 hours, covered on overnight cruises. No operator on the fiord runs a materially longer day cruise, so a longer total day means more road, not more water.
Do the small-group tours see anything different?
Same fiord, different vehicle and boat. You get a smaller coach, hotel pickup and drop-off, lunch, and the ability to linger at stops instead of moving with a group of fifty. That is what the extra money buys, and for some people it is worth it — the detail is on small-group tours.
Can I do Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound in one day?
No. Doubtful takes a boat across Lake Manapouri, then a coach over Wilmot Pass, then the cruise, then all of it in reverse. It is a much longer day and it costs more than a Milford day trip. Pick one, or give Doubtful its own day. Compare the Queenstown day trips first if your time is tight.
