What to wear on a Milford Sound cruise

Short answer: a waterproof jacket with a hood, layers underneath, and shoes you do not mind getting wet. It rains here on roughly half the days of the year, the outside deck is exposed, and the bow gets drenched when the boat noses into Stirling Falls. Everything else is comfort. Layers. Summer runs 18 to 25°C and winter 5 to 10°C, but the wind on a moving deck removes several degrees in either season.
Closed shoes with grip. The deck is wet whether or not the sky is.
Insect repellent. For the walk between the car park and the terminal, not for the boat. Sandflies are gone once you are moving.
Something for the camera. A dry bag or a jacket pocket that closes, for the Stirling Falls run.
Warm hat in winter. July is the coldest month and there will be snow on Mitre Peak.

Do not skip the outside deck to stay dry. The whole reason boats push in under Stirling Falls is to put you in the spray, and a wet jacket dries on the drive out. Standing at the window instead is the one regret I hear repeated.

What the season changes
