That is four hours of road removed from your day for the price of one night’s accommodation, and the four hours you remove are the dullest ones — the Queenstown to Te Anau leg, driven before dawn in a coach with the curtains still shut.
What you gain is not just a shorter day. It is a slower one. Te Anau coaches leave around 7:45am, 10am and 11am, which means you can start at a civilised hour and still reach the fiord before the Queenstown fleet clears out. Leave early, stop at Mirror Lakes and Monkey Creek, allow for a light-controlled Homer Tunnel, and buy a cruise-only ticket for $98 or $100 at the far end.
