Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound: which should you choose?

Milford vs Doubtful
Short answer: if this is your first time in Fiordland and you have one day, take Milford. It is the more dramatic of the two, and a road runs to the wharf. Doubtful is bigger, far quieter and much harder to reach: a boat across Lake Manapouri, a coach over Wilmot Pass, the cruise, then all of that in reverse. Doing both in one day is not realistic.

A note on where I stand: this site books Milford cruises and does not sell a Doubtful Sound trip, so read the following knowing there is nothing here for me in sending you across Lake Manapouri. I would still send you there under the right conditions.

What Milford does better

Concentration. Everything is close and everything is vertical. Mitre Peak comes straight out of the water, the walls run 1,200 m and up on both sides for the full 15 km, and Stirling Falls is a 151 m column you can put a boat under. In rain the whole cliff face turns into moving water. You get all of that in 105 minutes to two hours, and the road delivers you to the door. The detail is in what to expect on board.

What Doubtful does better

Quiet, and the feeling of being a long way from a road, which is accurate because you are. It is bigger and it has three arms, so the day has more shape to it. The access itself becomes part of the trip rather than an obstacle. If you have already done Milford, or you have several Fiordland days and you actively want the remote one, Doubtful earns its day.

The verdict for one day

Milford, and it is not close. Nothing in Doubtful matches the first sight of Mitre Peak from the deck, and a single day cannot absorb three transfers each way. Give Doubtful its own day if you have one to give. If you want the fiord at its quietest without the extra journey, the answer is an overnight cruise on Milford after the day boats have gone, or simply a late departure, which is argued out in morning or afternoon.

Insider tip

If you are choosing on crowds alone, do not swap fiords. Swap hours. A 3pm Milford boat on a weekday is a different fiord from a noon boat in January, and it costs the same.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound?

Milford, for a first visit and a single day: more dramatic, far easier to reach and cheaper. Doubtful is bigger and much quieter, and it repays a whole day of its own rather than a slot in a busy itinerary.

Can you do Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound in one day?

No, not in any realistic sense. Doubtful alone needs a boat across Lake Manapouri, a coach over Wilmot Pass and the cruise, then the same in reverse. Pick one and give the other its own day.

Is Doubtful Sound more expensive than Milford Sound?

Doubtful day trips typically run higher than Milford day trips, largely because of the transfers. Milford starts at $98 for a cruise-only ticket at the terminal. The full ladder is in how much a Milford Sound cruise costs.

Is Doubtful Sound quieter than Milford Sound?

Considerably. Milford takes between 550,000 and a million visitors a year and Doubtful takes a fraction of that. You can get much of the same effect at Milford by booking after 2pm, when the Queenstown coaches leave, as explained in the best time to visit.
