The two cruise-only tickets
The catamaran runs 105 minutes at $98. You meet at the counter on the right side of the visitor centre. It is a modern boat with large windows, HD cameras throwing the outside view onto indoor screens for when the weather closes in, large outdoor decks, live skipper commentary, and food and drinks to buy. It also includes the car park fee, which no other ticket does.
The small boat runs two hours at $100 and carries the smallest passenger numbers of the Milford operators. It stops more often at scenic points, has indoor and outdoor viewing areas, gives you complimentary tea, coffee and hot chocolate, and the skipper does the commentary. Parking, honestly
Terminal parking is NZD 10 per hour before 3pm, NZD 5 per hour after 3pm and NZD 30 overnight from 3:30pm to 11am. You pay by card at the machines at the car park entrance or inside the terminal, you enter your plate number, and no receipt is issued. On a two-hour cruise plus check-in and a wander, budget for three hours. That is NZD 30 on top of a $98 ticket unless you are on the catamaran, where it is already covered.
Deepwater Basin is free. It is about a 25-minute walk from the terminal, the spaces are limited, and it is first come, first served. In practice that means it works if you are early and it does not if you arrive with the 11am wave.

The five-hour rule
The catamaran operator advises allowing five hours from Queenstown and three hours from Te Anau to reach the terminal, and that is not padding. The 291 km from Queenstown takes about four hours fifteen non-stop, and nobody drives it non-stop, because the road is the reason you came. A self-drive day out of Queenstown is realistically twelve to fourteen hours — longer than the coach you were trying to avoid. Which is why, if you are driving, I would rather you slept in Te Anau. Book an early boat or anything from about 2pm. The car park and terminal are busiest between 11am and 1pm, when the Queenstown coaches arrive together, and the afternoon light on the cliff faces is better anyway.
Who should not buy a cruise-only ticket
Anyone without a car. Anyone nervous about a mountain road in winter. Anyone who wants the commentary, because the driver-guide on a coach is doing real work between Te Anau and the tunnel and you lose that entirely when you drive yourself.
