What the extra money actually buys
The gap between the $98 catamaran and the $172 Queenstown day tour is $74, and what that $74 buys is a seat, a driver and roughly 580 km of road you do not have to drive yourself. That is a fair trade if you have no car, or if the forecast has snow in it. It is a poor trade if you have a car sitting in a Te Anau motel car park. Above the $172 line you stop buying transport and start buying time or comfort. The $531 fly-back trip gives you three hours of your day back. The $379 overnight cruise gives you the fiord after the day boats have gone home. Both are defensible. Neither shows you a better fiord.
The costs that are not printed on the ticket
- Parking at the terminal. NZD 10 per hour before 3pm, NZD 5 per hour after 3pm, NZD 30 overnight. A three-hour midday stop is NZD 30. The catamaran includes the fee; every other cruise-only ticket does not. Deepwater Basin is free but it is a 25-minute walk each way, with limited spaces and no way to reserve one.
- Fuel. Queenstown to the terminal and back is about 582 km. From Te Anau it is about 240 km. There is no fuel at all between Te Anau and Milford Sound, so the tank you leave with is the tank you come home on.
- Lunch. Most cruise fares exclude food. The Te Anau trip and the small-group tour include a picnic; the premium coach sells lunch as an add-on. Details in is food included.

What a self-drive day really costs
On paper, driving from Queenstown and buying a $98 ticket is the cheapest way to see the fiord. Count the whole thing before you commit: fuel for 582 km, NZD 10 an hour for parking unless you are on the catamaran, 12 to 14 hours door to door, and the 1.2 km Homer Tunnel with a wait of up to 20 minutes each way in summer.
