My verdict: the only product on this site that gets you onto the water outside the roughly 10am to 3pm window every day boat shares. When the day boats leave, the fiord goes quiet in a way that no two-hour cruise can show you. The caveat is the sample: 4.7 from 58 reviews is a real rating but a thin one next to the 3,043 behind the small boat, so treat it as promising rather than settled.
What seventeen hours gets you that two do not
Time of day, mostly. Boat departures run roughly 10am to 3pm and the terminal is at its worst between about 11am and 1pm when the Queenstown coaches land together. An overnight sits either side of all of that. You are on the fiord in the evening and again first thing in the morning, which is when the water is calmest and the reflections work.
The kayaking or tender-boat excursion is the part I would not skip. From a kayak you are at water level under walls that go up more than 1,200 m, which is a different proposition from a viewing deck. It is also the only way to appreciate why the black coral colonies here start at about 10 m depth rather than the hundreds of metres you would expect — a freshwater layer sits on top of the seawater and cuts the light, so deep-water species grow shallow.
